Every couple must figure out how to have an awesome marriage and love their family well when life is pulling them in different directions. So, when my dear friend, Melanie Redd, asked me to write a post about the challenges of trying to keep relationships strong when time together is limited … I jumped on it!
We just loved being together. I know, young love … right?! But after we were married, one of our greatest challenges became trying to stay closely connected when we could no longer find time for those long conversations we loved so much. At first, I was teaching full-time and he was going to school. Fast forward a few years and besides raising little ones … we were serving in ministry together. I was teaching part-time, and trying to keep things running smoothly at home. Enter your email address to subscribe to this blog and receive notifications of new posts by email.
I LOVE hearing from you! Follow my blog with Bloglovin. Are they different from the original 10 Commandments in the Old Testament? I memorized John Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Jesus kind of love is more than just warm feelings. Loving like Jesus is an attitude that is demonstrated through actions. Life Application Bible Notes say: Repentance is defined as … turning from sin and dedicating yourself to the amendment of your life. When I stop seeking Him first. But staying focused on God is the antidote to worry! Little children are comfortable in their own skin.
In fact, He summed up the original 10 Commandments in the next two commands…. When you and I love God completely, we acknowledge Him for who He is … holy—set apart. Creator, Redeemer, Comforter, Father, and Friend. That defines loving our neighbor … doing good and taking care of each other. Can you imagine if everyone loved like that?! Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn others, or it will all come back against you.
Forgive others, and you will be forgiven. Give, and you will receive. Compassion, mercy, kindness, and forgiveness should set us apart as followers of Jesus. Imagine what could happen if we decided to simply love each other and let God take care of the rest. Have you noticed that when you smile at random strangers, they generally smile back? Compassion leads to more compassion.

But maybe we could transform our relationships if we determined to love intentionally. When people see what you and I have in Jesus, they should want what we have. I know I fall far short obeying His commands. He will be with you forever. We have Jesus, Himself, who died and rose again that we might be covered with His grace and mercy—His perfect forgiveness for the times we fall short. God does the rest … giving us everything we need. He fills us with His love.
He shows us where He wants to use us and He equips us to share His love with others. You want your children to be confident and successful. You want them to go into the world and fulfill their God-given purpose with passion and enthusiasm. You do all you can to help them fulfill their hopes and dreams because you want great things for them.
Where does humility fall on your list of things you want for them? Pray — ask God to help you and your children live with both confidence and humility. Strive in prayer; let faith fill your heart—so will you be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might. Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as an excuse to do evil.
Live as servants of God. Show respect for all people: My mom always asked me two questions after I had a disagreement with a friend. Why do you think they were upset, said what they did, or acted that way? How might you have handled it better? Teach them to admit their mistakes and apologize; forgive them and teach them to forgive others. Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so God can heal you. When a believing person prays, great things happen.
Any good apology has 3 parts: Each of you has received a gift to use to serve others. When you talk, you should always be kind and pleasant so you will be able to answer everyone in the way you should. It is an attitude, an expression, a look, a touch. It is anything that lifts another person. So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. Teach them about strengths and weaknesses. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand. Show them how to respect everyone no matter who they are or what they do.
Show them the importance of kindness and listening to others. Show them the blessing of service. Show them the importance of trying when it would be easier to quit. Show them your faith and love for the One who made them for His plans and purposes. It is something they, like you, will have to work at for the rest of their lives. God will use this in your life. My brother visited from Michigan this week and we had a couple of conversations about the challenges of maintaining friendships in a social media world.
Seriously, I can remember where each person was sitting. But more than our location at the table, I remember the question that invited us to share our stories…. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep. Somewhere in our story someone has rejected or betrayed us and we wonder … will this person judge me? Will they use my story against me? Since God chose you to be the holy people He loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.
Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. They must not slander anyone and must avoid quarreling. Instead, they should be gentle and show true humility to everyone. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. We can love like Jesus. You made us for relationships with you and with our families and our friends.
I believe it all comes from You because You summed all your commands for getting along with others into one simple sentence. Please forgive me, Father! Past hurts and failures, my own and those done by others, have left me wounded and defensive. Please help me let go.
Help me forgive those who have caused me pain and KNOW down to the depths of my soul, how very much You have forgiven in me. Your grace and mercy cover me and I believe they cover my friendships as well. Father, Your love covers me. Bless my friends through me and help me to love like Jesus. In whose precious name, I pray. Ten days ago, Collier Honor Flight 16 honored those brave military warriors with a day of respect and recognition.
The kindness of the Collier Honor Flight Team who saw to every need with joy and enthusiasm. As we talked again the next day, He teared up when he told me about the reception they received … especially as they returned to RSW Airport in Fort Myers. My dad said the thing that overwhelmed him most throughout the day was the JOY!
Not the joy of the veteran recipients … but the joy exhibited by those who made the day possible. Dad and I have talked about it several times this week and he tears up every time. How special they made each person feel! How every need was met! How hearts were encouraged and blessed! What if we looked at one another with kindness and got to know hearts before we judged and dismissed? What if every visitor to our churches were greeted like those we invite into our homes — with joyful hospitality?
For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of what we eat or drink, but of living a life of goodness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. If you serve Christ with this attitude, you will please God, and others will approve of you, too. So then, let us aim for harmony in the church and try to build each other up.
Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically. Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice! Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon. Think about ways you can add joy to serving your family, at work, or online. I believe our joyful service shows people the love of Jesus.
It may just be the thing that opens a door to someone wanting to know more about Him. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved. A huge shout out and thank you to everyone involved with the Collier Honor Flight A special thank you to Rick Wobbe, for his kind interactions with the vets and their families and Mamie Blue for sponsoring this flight. Our family thanks you all! Also, a thank you to my nephew, Ryan, who graciously took the time to travel with and serve as guardian for his grandpa for the flight!
We are so very thankful for him. If you have a minute — stop and wish him a Happy Birthday in the comments below. Leave your prayer requests…. Each time I work my way through the books of the Law, the historical books, the Psalms, and the prophets … I am overwhelmed with gratitude that the Lord of the universe wants us to know Him.
If the Bible is just another book then the author of the GQ article has a point. BUT — if the Bible is the inspired Word of God and used by the Holy Spirit to work in the hearts and minds of those who read and hear it, then it is the one book everyone should read.
I began reading through it every year … ten years ago. It makes me want to know Him better, trust Him more, and love Him above all else. That is one life-changing book! And as much as I want to live a life that honors God, I fail often. I challenge you to read the Bible with an open mind.
One more thing … some of the Christians I know are extremely kind and selfless. I really hope you get to meet some people like them, too! You may be the only Bible some person ever reads. Therefore I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God.
Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. For I decided that while I was with you I would forget everything except Jesus Christ, the one who was crucified.
You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Before you say anything remember that everyone is someone who is precious to God and dearly loved by Him! Loved so much that…. Then tell people how much Jesus, who died for them, loves them. Point them to Bible that is able to tell them all about the God who loves them, and let the Holy Spirit do the convicting on what is right and wrong. Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
I want people to look at my life and see the spiritual blessings of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Think about the way Jesus talked to the woman at the well , the woman caught in adultery , and Zacchaeus. A was a slightly built man with a wisp of silver hair.
He had a huge smile and a bear hug that wrapped around you and well, you just knew he meant it! Both A and his wife were humble servants … faithfully doing the unheralded jobs that few others wanted to do. They were always there early and they stayed late. I picture A standing near the entrance welcoming everyone who walked in with a handshake or a hug and the following simple sentence:. Member B was a taller more distinguished looking man. He always held leadership positions and knew how the church should run.
He liked tradition and was outspoken and unhappy about most changes. He served that church and gave generously. Rev and I had struggled with secondary infertility for 7 years. One particularly bad hormone swing day, I shared with her that I was hurting and sad.
She stepped in close, shook her finger in my face, and told me I should be ashamed of myself. I was blessed with two healthy children and I should stop feeling sorry for myself and be thankful. I was thankful for my children! I just had an exceptionally powerful mom gene! And at that moment, more than anything I needed love, kindness, and compassion.
I believe A and B and their wives loved Jesus and that they were trying to follow Him to the best of their abilities. God selected Abraham and his descendants as His chosen people not to exclude the other nations but because He wanted to draw all people to Himself through them. I gave them my decrees and regulations so they could find life by keeping them. And I gave them my Sabbath days of rest as a sign between them and me. A day of rest as a sign of the covenant … that they were set apart as His.
A day to refocus their priorities and remember all He had done for them. God gave His commands and the Sabbath out of love. He knew obedience would make their lives better. And He set them apart so the people around them would see the blessings of living in relationship with the one true God. They chose idolatry, power, prestige, popularity, and personal comfort over obedience. They wanted what the non-believers had. I want to be like Mr. I want my love for Jesus to bubble out of me all over everyone who meets me. I want to serve humbly as an offering of gratitude for all God has done for me.
Work with enthusiasm, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Times when I was critical and judgmental, and yes, maybe even a little self-righteous. Asaph had the opposite problem. He saw that wicked people sometimes had very good lives.
For there are no pangs in their death, But their strength is firm. They are not in trouble as other men, Nor are they plagued like other men " Psalm But eventually he realized that their apparent success was only temporary. When I thought how to understand this, It was too painful for me- until I went into the sanctuary of God; Then I understood their end. Surely You set them in slippery places; You cast them down to destruction. Oh, how they are brought to desolation, as in a moment! They are utterly consumed with terrors " Psalms Yet the problem remains that just because someone is successful at the moment, it doesn't necessarily mean that God is blessing them for living righteously.
